Glycemic Index Food Values

The Glycemic Index has been around since the early 1980's. It deals with sugars and types of carbohydrates. It's all about the quality of carbohydrates and how they impact digestion. What does it mean ? It's a ranking scale from 0-100. The lower the score, the less impact that food will have on blood glucose levels and insulin. In order to balance out the impact on blood sugar, help digestion, and have more energy and weight loss, limiting your choice of high GI foods, such as some types of pasta and highly refined white bread can help.
        High GI 70 + ( limit-avoid) :  Medium GI 56-69 (in moderation) :  Low GI below 55 (enjoy!)

ZINC SPEEDS RECOVERY FROM COMMON COLD Issue Date: 18th February 2011 Taking zinc supplements can lessen the severity and duration of the common cold, experts believe. A review of the available scientific evidence suggests that taking zinc within a day of the onset of cold symptoms speeds recovery. It may also help ward off colds, say the authors of the Cochrane Systematic Review that included data from 15 trials involving 1,360 people. "This review strengthens the evidence for zinc as a treatment for the common cold” Adults catch between two to four colds a year, children up to ten a year, and there is little a person can do to avoid these infections because the viruses that cause colds are so commonplace. Cold viruses can be passed from person to person not only by coughs and sneezes but also by touching contaminated surfaces such as door handles. There is no proven treatment for the common cold, but experts believe zinc medications may help prevent and lessen infections by coating the common cold viruses and stopping them from entering the body through the thin lining of the nose. And in laboratory tests, it also appears to stop the virus from replicating. There is also the suggestion that zinc aids the immune system and may dampen down some of the unpleasant reactions the body has to an invading virus. Speedy Recovery Lead researcher Meenu Singh, of the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research in Chandigarh, India, said: "This review strengthens the evidence for zinc as a treatment for the common cold. However, at the moment, it is still difficult to make a general recommendation, because we do not know very much about the optimum dose, formulation or length of treatment."

According to trial results, zinc supplements taken within a day of the onset of cold symptoms reduce the severity and length of illness. At seven days, more of the patients who took zinc remedies every couple of hours during the daytime had cleared their symptoms compared to those who took placebos.

And children who took 15mg of zinc syrup or zinc lozenges daily for five months or longer caught fewer colds and took less time off school.

Editor in Chief of the Cochrane Library, David Tovey, said: "This is a treatment that is showing some promise which, where treating the common cold is concerned, is unusual.

"Although there are many over-the-counter cold remedies already available, we are not awash with things that can stop cold symptoms or greatly reduce their severity. But there is uncertainty about the best doses, timings and formulations and more studies will be needed to look at this."
Nature's Sunshine's zinc contains 15mg of zinc per tablet, so is a perfect fit for people who would like to 'manage' their colds. Ref: BBC news 16.02.11

Vitamin D and weaning advice for new Scottish mothers

The Scottish government is to advise women who are planning a pregnancy to take vitamin D supplements, BBC Scotland can reveal.
The government will also urge new mothers not to wait too long before introducing lumpy food to their babies.

The new infant strategy aims to highlight how nutritional choices start before conception and do not end after breastfeeding.
Previous policies had concentrated on breastfeeding alone.
Health minister Shona Robison said: "What we're doing is putting breastfeeding in a wider context.

"We recognise that there's a lot more that we can be doing and that healthcare staff can be doing to advise women before conception.
"After conception there are things they can do about their own nutrition which can really benefit their newborn child."

Many women of childbearing age in Scotland are known to be deficient in key nutrients including iron, calcium, folate and vitamin D.
Health experts now recommended that women who are planning to become pregnant take a supplement of vitamin D as well as folic acid.

‘The results have been astounding’

Catherine's Background

Catherine has competed in six world championships and holds two Bronze and one Gold medal in the Best of British National Championships. The triathlons involve a 1,500 metre swim, immediately followed by a 40 kilometre bike section and then directly followed by a 10 kilometre run. Catherine has also competed in two Duathlon World Championships and has previously qualified to compete in the Elite Women’s start at the London Marathon.
Catherine's Testimonial

“As someone who has always been interested in health and studied nutrition, I have become increasingly concerned that most sports supplements contain unnatural ingredients and the method on how many sports products stimulate energy is not good for overall health.

I have been searching for a quality range of supplements for some time and fortunately I was introduced to the Nature’s Sunshine range.  The results which I have experienced have been astounding.  For example, when I finish any training session which may be anything from an hour hard swim or a 15 to 18 mile run, I feel like I haven’t even been training with no aches, no lack of energy and feeling like I could do the same session again.

Since taking Nature’s Sunshine products I have experienced radical differences in my training, racing and general health.  I have been using the sports programme, taking TNT for energy before and during training/racing.  I have always used a protein supplement after training/racing but the most commonly used protein powders taste synthetic and contain artificial sweeteners.

SynerProtein is the best protein I have tasted and with all the nutrients I feel my recovery time has greatly improved.  I always feel fully recovered and have trained the same day feeling stronger.  Recently, I achieved my personal best in a half marathon.  About 7 miles into the race I felt the Target Endurance kick in & felt an incredible amount of energy and strength.  Colds, and illness always affects athletes because intense exercise lowers the immune system.

Since I have been taking Zambroza in the morning, evening and before and after training I have not had any colds even with training up to 4 hours a day.
For any athlete reading my testimonial, I can assure you that you will not find a better range of products to support your sports performance, fitness, health, energy, endurance and vitality.”
